In 1979 Bernd Breymann and Klaus Enzmann founded TOPCAT GmbH. Capacity was limited by the rented wood shack, so the production of the hulls was moved to Italy, and company headquarters was moved to Gilching, Germany.
1977-1979 Production of the first 60 Topcats. It had a mast height of 7.00 m, a jib sail of 3.6 m², and a mainsail of 11.2 m². 1977 The first Topcat appeared, a 4.80 m long twin-hull boat that was simply plugged together.

1976 The new "Kick-up" rudder was added to the prototype. Klaus Enzmann build a first prototype without daggerboards or rudders, similar to the Spanish "Patin-Vela", but with many of the successful details of the later boats.

The patented Topcat surf rudders kick up automatically when touching the bottom without loosing navigation ability. Rudder bracings are made from glass-reinforced thermoplastic. The rudder blades are extruded from indestructible aluminum into a hydrodynamic profile, with a 3-point lockerty release. Helmsman and team can achieve improved velocity by fitting the 33 square-foot jib of the Formel2. The strong one-piece extruded fiberglass battens have PVC endcaps. The sails are manufactured from fresh American high-strength Polacron. It is possible to convert the Topcat to the Topcat Formel2 with cleverly constructed fittings, and without the aid of any tools. Standing rigging is made from V4A stainless steel and hammerhead style quick couplings. There is terminal forestay adjustment and simple airfoil adjustment on the boomless mainsail (simple mainsail connector on masthead). The rig consists of a rotating two-part mast resting on a Teflon coated ball joint, and an interior main halyard. Watertight stowage compartments are accessible through inspection covers. There are high-impact deck and body corners and moulded light supports. The bodys are built from hand-laminated fiberglass. It is locker, sporty, robust, easy to assemble without any tools and can be car-topped and rigged by one person.
